Councils, Partnerships & Data Protection

Freegle Volunteer Wiki › 🤝 Councils, Partnerships & Data Protection

Councils are natural allies for Freegle - reuse helps them hit landfill reduction targets, and a partnership can bring your group funding, publicity and credibility. This section covers how to approach a council and what to ask for once they're on board, plus Freegle's obligations around the personal data volunteers handle every day.

Start here: Contacting Councils for how to get a foot in the door, then Council Help for what to ask for once you are.

Working with councils

  • Contacting Councils - a phased approach to getting your council's attention, from a friendly first email to lobbying your MP if you're getting nowhere.
  • Council Help - practical things to ask a council for once you're in contact, from website links and leaflets to banners and staff training, with real examples of what other councils have provided.
  • Information for Councils - the councils section of the main Freegle website, kept up to date for councils to browse.
  • Council Newsletters - "Freegle Bites", the regular newsletter sent to UK councils, with a full archive of past editions.
  • Council Projects/Partnerships - a running log of Freegle's partnerships with individual councils, from Bassetlaw to Westminster, including the Essex sponsorship and Wandsworth cost-of-living project.
  • Freegle Cumbria County Council Partnership - a detailed case study of the long-running Cumbria partnership: Give and Take days, funding, and a LARAC awards shortlisting.
  • Housing Associations - notes on early exploratory work linking Freegle with housing associations via their tenancy-management software.
