Freegle is registered to claim Gift Aid on some donations. This is a scheme operated by HMRC, which allows registered charities to get an extra 25% on donations made by tax payers. https://www.gov.uk/claim-gift-aid
We have a page on the website - www.ilovefreegle.org/giftaid - where donors are directed to either give us their consent to claim on their donation, or to decline.
We have a Gift Aid team which checks Gift Aid forms to make sure all the information needed to claim has been given, and our Treasurer compiles all the information from donations made and which ones have consent for Freegle to collect that extra 25%. The form can only be completed when the donor is logged in, so that the system can record the Gift Aid form number on their account.
The basic information on the completed forms is sent to the Gift Aid team (via a special tab on Support Tools) to be checked. It also highlights if the form has been completed without a matching donation. The team makes sure the consent has the appropriate information and also follows up orphaned consents that aren't matched to a donation to try to find out whether there is a donation somewhere that hasn't been accredited to a member.
Freegle can't collect Gift Aid on donations made through routes that collect the Gift Aid on our behalf, eg. CAF, Giving Fund, and Everyclick, Charities Trust.
