== Trash Nothing FAQ  ==
====TN Members====
People wanting to join a Freegle group via TN are connected to us from the TN site via a TN email address, eg. xxxxxxx32-g4577@user.trashnothing.com

'''''What is trash nothing and how does it work?''' The trash nothing site provides new email accounts designed to make free recycling quicker and easier. Everyone who signs up gets a free trash nothing email account they can use to subscribe to free recycling groups on Yahoo Groups. Thousands of free recycling members and moderators around the world are already using trash nothing to improve their free recycling experience!''
A lot of new members join Freegle groups via TN, so they are a valuable resource.  The TN site and apps are closely integrated with Freegle and TN works as alternate interface for Freegle groups.  TN members are able to browse, reply to and submit offers and requests (and edit their offers and requests). TN members can also see and respond to chats on TN or by email. TN members can also view thumbs up/down information and member profiles on TN.

'''''Why is the group I moderate listed on trash nothing?''' We maintain a list of free recycling groups around the world as a convenience to people looking to subscribe to their local free recycling groups with trash nothing email accounts.''
TN members can’t see events, volunteer opportunities or the chitchat section that is on Freegle.

'''''How do I get the group I moderate added to trash nothing?''' Just send us a message with the group web site and we'll add it to our list.''
TN members can control their profile information and account settings at: https://trashnothing.com/beta/settings  There are two choices when it comes to TN user names - the first part of the member's email address, or a name of the member's choice (i.e. whatever is put in the “name” box). There is a tickbox for “use name”. If that’s not ticked TN will use the first part of the email address.

'''''How do I get the TrashNothing links removed from messages posted?''' If you want the TrashNothing links removed from messages posted via TN members on your group simply ask Andrew from TN to remove links-he will. He will also give you a link so you can make further adjustments to settings for TN members on your group. .''

'''''Why would people want to use trash nothing instead of the Yahoo Groups web interface or their normal email accounts?''' We've packed tons of new features into trash nothing email accounts that make them quicker and easier for people to use with free recycling groups.''
Some members get confused between the two sites. How it works is:

''Neither the Yahoo Groups website or any other email accounts are designed for free recycling groups. They all work fine for normal emails but they don't understand the rules or the different types of posts that are part of free recycling.''
*Freegle members can reply to Freegle or TN posts from Freegle using their Freegle account.
*TN members can reply to Freegle or TN posts from TN using their TN account.
*If people use just one system, they’ll be fine. They don’t need two accounts.
*If a Freegle member goes to TN and tries to reply using a Freegle account, it won’t work because TN doesn’t know about it and they’ll need to create an account on TN.
*If a TN member goes to Freegle and tries to reply using a TN account, it won’t work because Freegle doesn’t know about it and they’ll need to create an account on Freegle.

''For example, composing correct post subject lines or browsing only offer posts that are not taken are difficult and time consuming tasks with Yahoo Groups or an email account from Gmail or Hotmail. But these tasks take no time or effort at all with a trash nothing email account.''
So, members need to pick one system and stick to it to avoid confusion.

'''''Why would I want members of the groups I moderate to use trash nothing?''' Are you tired of correcting subject lines and hearing complaints about spam or email overload? A lot of moderators have these problems and waste valuable time and energy fixing them every time a new member joins or a new spammer shows up. With trash nothing email accounts, these problems disappear!''
====TN Member Moderation/Group Settings====
There is [https://trashnothing.com/moderator/group-settings a moderators page] where you can specify things like what format TN subject lines are in and if/how crossposting is allowed.
(To log in without a verification email, go to the top of [[ModTools#Getting_Set_Up|ModTools Settings: Community]] and click the link to your community's TN settings.)

''The post composer built-in to trash nothing automatically handles correct subject line formatting for every post so neither you or the group members have to. It also lets members choose to use the Fair Offer Policy so more group members have a fair chance of getting items.''
Volunteers should get a reminder about the settings every six months and you can access the site from the reminder.  If there are any problems just [https://trashnothing.com/contact contact Andrew].

''Since trash nothing email accounts are separate from people's personal email accounts, members don't have to worry about overloading their inbox with group emails on high traffic groups.''
Example of six month reminder message:
''This is an automated reminder that it's been at least 6 months since the xxxx Freegle group settings have been updated on trashnothing.com.  If the group rules, questionnaire or post format have changed in the last 90 days, please click the link below to update the settings:
https://trashnothing.com/moderator/group-settings?id=xxxxFreegle''

''These days, more and more groups are becoming infected with auto-reply spammers and spammers who use non-member email addresses to send spam. But with aggressive spam filtering, trash nothing blocks these spammers from reaching group members with trash nothing email accounts. And with the ability to flag any post in two clicks, group members can quickly and easily alert you to new spam and other inappropriate posts.''
''The Group Settings page on trashnothing.com is used to configure how the xxxx Freegle group works for members of the group who are using trashnothing.com email accounts. The settings on this page are meant to work alongside the group's existing rules and guidelines.''

''And by using trash nothing email accounts, members gain more privacy because they never have to reveal their personal email account while using their local groups or interacting with other members.''
''If you have any questions about the Group Settings page, you can contact us at the link https://trashnothing.com/contact and/or you can reach the moderators page from here https://trashnothing.com/moderator/group-settings?id=xxxxxFreegle''

''Do you have ideas or feedback to improve free recycling on trash nothing? Let us know! We'd love to work with you to improve the free recycling experience.''
NOTE: This email will probably show up first on the ModTools chat interface. <br>
Once you click the link in that email, you will be able to view and update the group settings.<br>

'''''Can I still kick / ban / moderate people who use trash nothing?''' Yes. People with trash nothing email accounts are normal email members of groups on Yahoo Groups so moderators are always in complete control of the group and the group membership.''
It is probably worth checking which other TN groups are in your area so you are aware of the groups your TN members might also be members of, in case of queries etc.  You might also wish to become a TN member so you are aware what your members can see and how the site operates from a member’s point of view.
Once you access the moderator page it’s pretty much self explanatory but worth telling your team why they are getting weird TN messages in group chat etc.

'''''How do I know if people are using trash nothing?''' You can easily identify trash nothing users by the email address they use to subscribe and post to a group. All trash nothing users email addresses end with @user.trashnothing.com''
TN has a help section for TN members at the link below.  You can refer TN members to the help section below if they need help using the TN interface:
* https://help.trashnothing.com

'''''How can I tell what IP address a trash nothing user has?''' Emails sent using trash nothing email accounts contain the user's IP address in the X-trash-nothing-User-IP header.''
====Locations====

=== ''Common Misconceptions'' ===
You can set the location format in Preferred Subject Line Location:
*neighbourhood name

*nearby cross streets

'''''People can use trash nothing to see group posts without being a member of the group''' False. The trash nothing site only provides email accounts to people who sign up. Like any other email account, they won't see anything from a group until they use their email account to subscribe to a free recycling group. Only after they are subscribed to a group, as a normal email member, do they start seeing the group posts that Yahoo Groups sends to them.''
The newest version of the TN site and apps gives members full control over the exact location where the map is centered every time that the member posts. If you notice a TN post with an incorrect map location in the future, you can simply ask the TN member to edit their post to correct the location that the map shows.

'''''Group posts are republished on trash nothing''' False. Posts only appear in the personal trash nothing email accounts given to people who sign up and use their trash nothing email account with a free recycilng group. As normal email subscribers to a group, people with trash nothing email accounts receive the posts because Yahoo Groups sends them to their email account. Posts are not otherwise made available on trash nothing.''
If you want to send more detailed editing instructions to a TN member, you can use the following:

'''''Access to group posts on trash nothing violates Yahoo's Terms of Service''' False. The trash nothing site works using the standard Yahoo Groups email subscription and membership process that allows any email address (whether from Gmail, Hotmail or trash nothing) to subscribe to and receive email from a group on Yahoo Groups. In this way, every trash nothing user has a valid email subscription to the groups they are accessing with their personal trash nothing email account.''
To edit your post, follow the instructions at: https://help.trashnothing.com/how-do-i-edit-my-post
And once you’re editing your post, click on the map to change where the map shows or use the “New Location” option that is part of the Location selection on the edit post page.

'''''People have to use their existing Yahoo Groups and/or email accounts and passwords to use trash nothing''' False. The trash nothing site gives everyone who signs up a new email account to use. The site does not access or have any need to access existing usernames or passwords to work.''
====Posting to groups====

Groups

This is an independent site, run and owned by Andrew Trusty, operating worldwide. The site connects into Freegle and Freecycle groups, giving the members a simple way to use as many groups as they wish. Trash Nothing (TN) also provides the facility to set up and run groups on TN.

TN Members

People wanting to join a Freegle group via TN are connected to us from the TN site via a TN email address, eg. xxxxxxx32-g4577@user.trashnothing.com

TN members can’t see events, volunteer opportunities or the chitchat section that is on Freegle.

Some members get confused between the two sites. How it works is:

  • Freegle members can reply to Freegle or TN posts from Freegle using their Freegle account.
  • TN members can reply to Freegle or TN posts from TN using their TN account.
  • If people use just one system, they’ll be fine. They don’t need two accounts.
  • If a Freegle member goes to TN and tries to reply using a Freegle account, it won’t work because TN doesn’t know about it and they’ll need to create an account on TN.
  • If a TN member goes to Freegle and tries to reply using a TN account, it won’t work because Freegle doesn’t know about it and they’ll need to create an account on Freegle.

So, members need to pick one system and stick to it to avoid confusion.

TN Member Moderation/Group Settings

There is a moderators page where you can specify things like what format TN subject lines are in and if/how crossposting is allowed. (To log in without a verification email, go to the top of ModTools Settings: Community and click the link to your community's TN settings.)

Volunteers should get a reminder about the settings every six months and you can access the site from the reminder. If there are any problems just contact Andrew.

Example of six month reminder message: This is an automated reminder that it's been at least 6 months since the xxxx Freegle group settings have been updated on trashnothing.com. If the group rules, questionnaire or post format have changed in the last 90 days, please click the link below to update the settings: https://trashnothing.com/moderator/group-settings?id=xxxxFreegle

The Group Settings page on trashnothing.com is used to configure how the xxxx Freegle group works for members of the group who are using trashnothing.com email accounts. The settings on this page are meant to work alongside the group's existing rules and guidelines.

If you have any questions about the Group Settings page, you can contact us at the link https://trashnothing.com/contact and/or you can reach the moderators page from here https://trashnothing.com/moderator/group-settings?id=xxxxxFreegle

NOTE: This email will probably show up first on the ModTools chat interface.
Once you click the link in that email, you will be able to view and update the group settings.

TN has a help section for TN members at the link below. You can refer TN members to the help section below if they need help using the TN interface:

Locations

You can set the location format in Preferred Subject Line Location:

  • neighbourhood name
  • town or city name
  • nearby cross streets
  • postal code
  • local
  • area and short post code
  • any of the above
  • other

The newest version of the TN site and apps gives members full control over the exact location where the map is centered every time that the member posts. If you notice a TN post with an incorrect map location in the future, you can simply ask the TN member to edit their post to correct the location that the map shows.

If you want to send more detailed editing instructions to a TN member, you can use the following:

To edit your post, follow the instructions at: https://help.trashnothing.com/how-do-i-edit-my-post And once you’re editing your post, click on the map to change where the map shows or use the “New Location” option that is part of the Location selection on the edit post page.

Posting to groups

A member can compose one message and then select multiple groups to send that to (Freegle, Freecycle or some others). There is no need to compose a separate message for each group. If they don't select any groups it goes to nearby TN members only.

When a TN member crossposts to multiple groups on TN, their post may get published on one group and then become promised before another group approves the post. This can sometimes be confusing for Freegle moderators because Freegle moderators only see posts from other Freegle groups in ModTools and not from non-Freegle groups on TN. There are also cases where people post on TN and crosspost on other sites or apps.

When a TN member only posts to a single Freegle group, that post won’t be published on the Freegle group on FD or TN until the moderators of the Freegle group approve the post.

When a Freegle moderator rejects a post from a TN member, that post will not show up on the Freegle group on FD or TN.

When a Freegle moderator edits a post from a TN member, the edits will show up on the Freegle group on FD and TN.

When a Freegle moderator deletes a post from a TN member, that post will be deleted on the Freegle group on FD and TN.

Reporting Problems

TN members sometimes report problems with TN to Freegle moderators. The current best practice is to refer TN members to the TN help section where they can find answers or contact TN.

If this is something moderators come across often, it's probably a good idea to add a standard response to their community's mod config standard messages.
