Unsubscribe: help a member to leave

From Freegle Wiki

There are several ways for members to leave Freegle entirely, listed at the bottom of this page. You'll never hear from the ones who succeed - only the ones who fail.

  • Some can't find the way out, or can't make it work
  • or they leave a community but remain a Freegle member
  • or they switch off certain notifications but stay on the community

So you may get messages saying:

  • "I have tried to leave over and over but..."
  • "You are not complying with GDPR regulations and..."
  • "...your unsubscribe links do not work."

By this point, some may be frustrated or angry.

How to help

Either forward the request to Freegle Support, or look up the email address in ModTools > Members > Approved search box. If they're only on your community/communities, click the Remove box(es).

You can't remove members from communities you don't moderate - send details to Freegle Support, who will remove them. This is easier and quicker than talking the member through it themselves.

If the address doesn't show up, forward the request to Freegle Support. Or, to do it yourself, take these next steps:

  • Look up the email address without the part after the @.
  • If they have an unusual name, or there are other clues, search for those.
  • If you find a probable match, ask the member if it's theirs.
  • If that doesn't help, ask if they use a different email address for Freegle, since the one they wrote from isn't on your list.
  • If not, ask them to forward the next notification they get from Freegle, so you can investigate:
    • check what email address it was sent to - that's the one to unsubscribe
    • check it's genuinely from Freegle (other online reuse organisations exist)

If you have any problems, pass the request to Freegle Support.
