Discourse menus, preferences and notifications
The ☰ hamburger icon shows menu links to unread posts and each available group.
The user+cog icon takes you straight to your main email preferences. The various tabs within Preferences let you customise your notifications.
Clicking your icon shows your recent notifications. You can also reach your preferences by clicking your name, then Preferences.
What emails you receive is controlled in the "Emails" and "Notifications -> Groups" preference tabs.
- In Preferences -> Emails, choose "Mailing list mode" to receive a mail for every single post (except muted items).
- Alternatively, enable "Activity Summary" for a digest mail covering all recent activity on unmuted topics.
- You can also opt to be mailed when someone mentions you.
- In Notifications -> Groups, you can choose which groups to watch (see below).
Use the "Notifications" preference tabs to control how you're alerted to new content - for example, by email or browser/app notification.
Within Notifications -> Groups, you can choose which groups to follow:
- You can be "watching", "tracking" or "watching first post" for each group.
- You can also "track" individual topics you're interested in.
- You can "mute" particular groups or users.
"Watching" notifies you of every new topic and reply; "tracking" mainly shows you new topics; "watching first post" only alerts you to new topics in that group. If you've already seen new messages online, you won't get an email for them.
When viewing a group, you can also set notifications from the icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
