Discourse overview

Creating a new topic

  • Click "New Topic" on the home page or a group screen.
  • Make sure you're posting to the right group.
  • Use the rich text editor to format your post, including images and links.
  • Refer to other users with the @ symbol, e.g. @Chris_Cant.
  • Click "show preview" (bottom right) to see what the post will look like.
  • Click "Create Topic" to finish.

Click New Topic, then use the editor to write your post.

Replying to a topic

Click "Reply" at the bottom of a topic to bring up the editor.

If you click the top-left editor icon when starting a reply, you can choose to "Reply as a linked topic" - starting a new, linked topic instead.

Editing, deleting and pinning

You can edit your own topics and replies. You can delete your own replies (they show as "post withdrawn" for 24 hours before disappearing; this time can be configured). To delete a topic, flag it for the moderators' attention.

Moderators can pin topics to the top of a group.

Polls

You can include a poll in a new topic. When the topic editor appears, click the ⛭ settings cog and choose "Build poll". Options include single choice, multiple choice and number rating, and you can choose whether to show results while the poll is running. You can close a poll at a specified time, or manually whenever you want.

Give your topic a good title and some explanatory text if needed, and check your wording carefully - you can only edit a poll for 5 minutes after creating it.

To make a poll, start a New Topic, click the cog, then select Build Poll Choose the type of poll and give the options

Scheduled posts

Admins and moderators can create scheduled posts. Regularly repeating posts aren't possible.
