From Freegle Wiki

There's various legislation covering items found on beaches around our coasts.

This article explains it well: https://discovertheoutdoors.co.uk/beachcombing-uk-law/. In short:

  • Sand - unlawful to remove from a beach
  • Stones and pebbles - unlawful to remove from a beach
  • Sea glass - OK to remove
  • Seashells - OK to remove (as long as uninhabited), but they're part of the beach's ecosystem
  • Driftwood - OK to remove, but, like shells, is part of the beach's ecosystem
  • Fossils - OK to remove, but interesting or rare finds should be reported to a local scientific or museum establishment
