Freegle UK Central: Summary of items of interest - July 2016 (206 posts)

July was pretty quiet in Central, but there was a lot going on in Tech in relation to the…

New platform

Edward has now released FDv3, an early beta version and is asking people to try it out – see message number 58888 for his summary of the position so far https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FreegleUK-Central/conversations/messages/58888 You can find FDv3 here https://iznik.ilovefreegle.org/ and to join in the detailed discussion on Tech, go here https://uk.groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Freegle-Tech/info .

New terms of use

New terms of use will be required once the new platform is up and running as users will no longer be bound by the Yahoo terms. Some new draft terms have been put together and are being discussed by the Development group – here is a link to the group https://uk.groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FreegleDevelopment/info

Next Door

Next Door is a US-based neighbourhood network that plans to launch soon in the UK. Some Freegle mods have already signed up, with mixed success. In order to try and get groups going, Next Door offers modest inducements. At message number 59033 you can see the kind of stuff Next Door sends out weekly to people running their groups https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FreegleUK-Central/conversations/messages/59033

Courier scam news

Not many scams to report in July – just a few of the old faithfuls – plasma TV, embroidery machine, ladies bike, laptop. (Why do they never offer paving slabs???)

Non-moderators for Board members

There has been a shortage of Board Directors for some time, and the fact that the (volunteer) position had been advertised on social media generated a lot of discussion, largely around whether people with no experience of moderating a Freegle group should be eligible. (It is within the specification for Board membership.) If you are interested in how the discussion went, start here https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FreegleUK-Central/conversations/messages/59060

Swimming pool in a car?

Posted by Cat (media star), at post number 59034 – ‘In June we had an unusually popular post on our national Freegle Facebook page. A photo of a car upcycled into a swimming pool was 'liked' and 'shared' so much that the post reached over 200,000 people in a day or so (the most popular/successful singular post we have ever had on our Facebook page) This is the power of social media :-)’ . So, as Cat also says, ‘It would be fab for any of you already on Facebook or Twitter, to try and remember to go to Freegle pages and from time to time 'like' 'share' 'retweet' etc our posts. This REALLY does help to get our name out there and inspire more people to think about reuse and maybe even join their local Freegle group.
