Crossposting
Some communities' volunteers discourage members from posting to several communities at once, for the reasons set out on Cross-posting.
This page gives sample admin messages you can send to members to discourage or manage this practice.
In Trash Nothing's settings for your community, crossposting can be disabled altogether, or barred for specific other communities.
Sample admins
This general admin message is being sent to all $nummembers members of $groupname.
Sending the same message to several communities at once is called crossposting. Please only post to your local community first. If you don't get a response after 24-48 hours, you can then post to a neighbouring community - and wait again before posting to more.
Crossposting causes problems for several reasons:
- Members can already see posts from further afield by adjusting the distance setting, so there's no need to crosspost to reach interested people
- It increases the number of messages per community
- Whoever crossposts may end up dealing with an excess of responses
- It can cause no-shows, when people realise how far they'd have to travel
On the other hand, keeping to your local community helps create more of a sense of community, and can mean less fuel used and less pollution. Members who want to see more posts can always join more communities.

We ask that members use their home community first when offering or requesting items.
Using your home community first has personal, community and environmental benefits. It:
- Reduces competition for items
- Reduces no-shows
- Saves money, by potentially reducing the amount of travel needed to give and receive items
- Reduces abuse of the system, since a smaller community is less anonymous - members get to know each other better, which leads to fewer bad behaviours
- Makes Freegle more accessible if you don't have transport
- Means bulky items may be collectable on foot if they're only a few streets away
- Reduces the number of messages per community
- Increases good neighbourliness and local community spirit
- Reduces the environmental impact of the distance travelled
