Changing community name
Changing the name of a local Freegle community - for example, to include the word "Freegle" if you don't already use it - is straightforward and painless for volunteers.
How to change your community's name
- Get in touch with the New Groups Team at newgroups@ilovefreegle.org. They can also help set up a Facebook page to publicise the community if you don't already have one, and will offer you an updated logo.
- Choose a date for the changeover and give Freegle's IT expert a few days' notice - they'll do most of the necessary work.
- Send an admin message to your community before the change (a sample is below).
- In ModTools, edit your Welcome message and any Standard Messages.
- Update your social media pages if applicable. You could mark the occasion with a public post, such as a short history of the community and the reason for the name change.
Sample admin message
On XXXXday afternoon this online community will be renamed to XX Freegle. "Freegle" stands for "FREE Giving, Locally, Easily" and is the national organisation we're part of. Freegle provides excellent technical and personal support for groups like ours, so there's no reason to think about leaving it as our umbrella organisation. Renaming to use "Freegle" will help promote Freegle both nationally and as our local community.
This shouldn't cause any disruption to our service. However, if you have a "rule" or "filter" for your emails based on our name or email address - for example, to put them into a specific folder - you'll want to update that rule.
It's possible your email provider might start sending Freegle emails to your junk mail folder, so please check there if in doubt, and retrain your email system as usual if needed.
