Role of the Safeguarding Officer

Appointment

This role is appointed by the Board. The Board can ask for recommendations for the role or approach individual candidates directly. The Board will inform Freegle Central of an appointment or change to this role. The current incumbent of the role can be found in Modtools>Teams. (Note: Bill Hopkinson was appointed as Safeguarding Officer at the Board meeting on 2nd April 2025 for one year)

Role

The purpose of the role is to act as Freegle's main contact for safeguarding issues, and to help the Board, contractors and volunteers with safeguarding issues.

Remit

• Advise and support Freegle in developing and establishing Freegle’s approach to safeguarding.
• Play a lead role in maintaining and reviewing the plan for safeguarding.
• Coordinate the distribution of policies, procedures and safeguarding resources throughout Freegle.
• Advise on training needs and development, providing training where appropriate.
• Provide safeguarding advice and support to contractors and volunteers.
• Manage safeguarding concerns, allegations or incidents reported to safeguarding.
• Manage referrals to key safeguarding agencies (eg social services or police) of any incidents or allegations of abuse and harm.
