The Promise button is available to members posting offers.
If you promise an item from My Posts, you'll get a list of people who've messaged you recently to choose from (not necessarily about that item). If you promise it from Chats, you'll get a list of your recent posts to choose from (not just the one they asked about) - useful since people sometimes ask for several items in one reply, or you want to promise several items to the same person.
What happens when you use the Promise button:
- The offer is greyed out on-site - people can still reply, but they're warned they might not get it. This is because some people promise things too soon, then need to fall back on other replies if there's a no-show or a change of mind.
- The other person is told, which nudges both people to recognise they've made a commitment.
- There's no auto-repost, and no "what happened about this" follow-up mail.
- My Posts shows who you've promised each item to, making it easier to keep track.
- People replying by email won't know an item's been promised, so you may still get replies afterwards.
- People who've already replied aren't notified when an item is promised, but are notified if it's later taken by someone else.
If a member promises an item to someone who fails to collect it, they need to unpromise it before offering it to anyone else. Unpromising shows as a "no-show" on that person's profile.
