Sample admin messages you could use to tell your community about reselling.

Resellers

Most communities allow reselling. However, if you plan to sell anything given to you by another member, you're asked to say so, either in your post or when requesting the item(s).

Please don't request items the offerer has marked "not for resale". If you take something for your own use and later don't need it, please either give it away or put it back on Freegle.

Resale of items

Dear members,

Reselling items isn't against our guidelines, as long as the member gifting the item agrees.

It's fine to use items received via $groupname in fundraising for a recognised local charity - a car boot or garage sale, a second-hand shop, or even eBay - as long as the gifter is aware.

However, if you run a commercial business and intend to sell goods obtained from $groupname, you must tell the moderators of your plans when you join.

Anyone reselling items obtained through $groupname must tell the donor of that intent in their reply to an Offer, or in their initial Wanted post.

If you obtained something from $groupname and, through a change of circumstances, no longer need it, we'd suggest you:

a) offer it back to the community, b) offer it to a local charity, or c) ask the original giver's permission to sell it on.

This isn't just good manners - the original giver may prefer it to be re-offered to the community or donated to a local charity. If you can't recall the original giver's details, your local volunteers may be able to help.

Freegle members are naturally friendly and trusting - please don't abuse that trust. Any reported incidents of reselling will be checked, and may lead to suspension or a ban from Freegle.

Freegle, selling, and keeping things out of the tip

Freegle exists to keep unwanted things out of landfill - that's its main aim. We're really grateful for all your activity, your Wanteds and your Offers, because all of it cuts down what ends up in the bin or at the tip.

A few members have raised questions about selling on items. As the moderator team, we've discussed this a lot. We can't really enforce rules here, since it's too hard to see what happens once something's been passed on - so we just want to ask you for one thing.

If you're looking for things to sell on, whether for charity or as part of a business - say you refurbish bikes or computers and sell them on, or want stock for a car boot sale or charity shop - that's fine. It still keeps things out of landfill. We just ask that, out of courtesy and the spirit of Freegle, you say that's what the items are for. This gives people the choice.

If you're giving something away and specifically don't want it resold, feel free to say so. Just remember Freegle isn't about need - it isn't a needs-based charity - and people who resell are still keeping things out of the bin, but we understand if you'd prefer this not to happen with your item.

This doesn't apply to people selling on or giving away things they've used themselves and no longer need - just things asked for with the sole intention of reselling.
