Yahoo! Groups

When the idea of online reuse groups was first thought of, Yahoo! Groups provided the perfect solution - free, good format, easy to use (for the times).

Several years later we are still, in the main, using Yahoo! for the basic infrastructure for providing a group to our local communities. Along the way life and technology has moved on, so Freegle has gathered some 'extras' to help run and use the groups and can also provide a Yahoo free option of hosting groups directly on the national website.

ModTools

ModTools helps you moderate Freegle or other reuse groups hosted on Yahoo! Groups and Freegle Direct. It can also be used to moderate other Yahoo Groups. ModTools is also available as an app which is simultaneously updated and available for Android and Apple tablets and mobiles.

Freegle Direct

The latest application/interface from Edward, this can be 'bolted on' to the Yahoo Group to make freegling a much easier and better experience for members.

The latest version can now provide the option to host groups directly on the national website, which provides less complications and a much easier to use facility for members and volunteers.

Freegle Mobile app

A Freegle App is available for group members on Apple and Android.

Facebook

With permission from members, individual messages can be republished onto a group Facebook page. Centrally, Freegle runs a Facebook page to generate interest and share good news stories. This can easily be shared to group pages via Modtools.

Twitter

Groups can set up a linked Twitter account which, like Facebook, extends the reach of Freegle on the internet and generates more interest and participation.

Local Facilities

Norfolk Freegle

Launched in July 2012, 8 Freegle groups covering the county of Norfolk and neighbouring Waveney District moved off Yahoo! Groups altogether to their own platform.

Sustain Eden project

Penrith and Eden Freegle group joined together with other local organisations to deliver a project in their area, funded by a Big Lottery grant. The Grow Your Own project runs from Feb 2013 to Oct 2015.

Member Plug-in withdrawn

Edward previously provided an application for members of Yahoo local groups to use to help them get the best out of their group. But unfortunately, he didn't get any offers of support to keep it running. It has now been withdrawn, but Freegle Direct provides a more integrated and simple solution for members.
