Report for Freegle Mentors April 2017

Mentor Team

Mentors currently have 10 members and 1 Board observer. The Team members are:
Alison, Christian, Cooky, David, Diz, Jacqui, Jo and Tom. Sheila is the team coordinator Wanda is acting co-coordinator. Andy Ludlow is our Board observer.

Mod Training

Mentors trained five mods for four different groups this month.

We trained two mods to use modtools for Llyn Peninsula, One for Worcester, One for Kensington and Chelsea and we recruited and trained a new mod to help out on Towcester. All of them are actively moderating the groups they were recruited for now.

Sheila has done a bit more work on the modtools user guide for trainee moderators and we hope it will be in use very soon.

Mentor run groups

Sadly two of our busy London groups were being so irregularly moderated, with the group owner moderating just eleven times in four months, they were considered to have been abandoned. Mentors tried to contact the owner by emails, telephone and posting directly to pending on the group without success. Mentors were still on board from mentoring the owner at Launch and so both groups are now back in Freegles care and being regularly moderated again. We will be recruiting moderators to help out on those groups very soon, although we are still hoping the original owner will get in touch.

After it was agreed that we should make some caretaker groups native groups, we moved two groups off of Yahoo and onto native hosting. One of the groups has a new mod team moving in but they are bringing their Yahoo group with them, so one of these groups will return to having a Yahoo group in the next couple of days. We are currently trying to work out which groups will be best to move next and will get a couple more moved across. Once we have a few groups on Native hosting, we will try recruiting again to see if it will be easier to get volunteers when a Yahoo id is not required.

There are currently 36 groups listed on the caretaker list needing new owners and 11 that are being cared for temporarily. These include some groups being cared for by non mentors. Since the list began, permanent new owners have been found for another 34 groups.

We come again to the list of groups under the care of caretakers. If any mod teams local to any of these groups would like to take any of these groups on as permanent new owners, please contact us

Support Offered

Mentors are here to help groups any way we can. If you are struggling to cope, please let us know, we are happy to help out.

Holiday season is fast approaching again. If you are going away, please don’t leave your group unattended and unmoderated, please contact us at mentors@ilovefreegle.org and we can get a mentor on board to help you out, who will be happy to be removed on your return.

If you know of any group that is being left unmoderated for long periods, mentors can be contacted in strictest confidence. We would rather help out and get things back on track before a group ends up being abandoned.
