Admin resale of items
Hi people!!

Re-selling of xxxyourgroupnameherexxx Freegle received items is NOT against the rules. As long as the stuff stays out of the landfill it is alright to use xxxyourgroupnameherexxx Freegle received items in fund raising support of a recognized local charity at a car boot or garage sale, in a 2nd hand shop or even on Ebay to help fund your life. Three Hard and Fast Rules apply:

Hard and Fast Rule No. 1 - If you operate a commercial business and intend selling goods obtained from xxxyourgroupnameherexxx Freegle, on joining you MUST advise the Moderator of your planned activity on receipt of this letter.

Hard and Fast Rule No. 2: Anyone reselling xxxyourgroupnameherexxx Freegle obtained items MUST CLEARLY advise the Donor of this intent in their FIRST response to an OFFER or in their initial WANTED posting. Anyone Wanting xxxyourgroupnameherexxx Freegle items for resale (even for a charity sale) must clearly state this in their post.

Hard and Fast Rule No. 3: If you obtained something from xxxyourgroupnameherexxx Freegle and through a change of circumstances no longer require it we suggest you (in order of preference):

a) Re-offer it back to the original Giver,
b) Offer it to the Group in general,
c) Offer it to a local Charity,
d) Ask the original givers permission to sell it on.

Not only is this good manners, but the original giver may prefer it be re-offered to the Group or donated to a local charity. If you cannot recall the original givers details, contact yer Wee Moddies and we will help out as best we can.

There are NO exceptions to these rules. xxxyourgroupnameherexxx Freegle Members are intrinsically friendly & trusting creatures. Violating these rules is an act of deliberate deception and violates the Group's trust. Depending on the severity of the situation, Violators may face Full Moderation, temporary suspension or even have their membership permanently revoked at the first substantiated incident. Full details of all incidents will be passed on to all Moderators within Freegle, which is vast!! No exceptions, no second chances, no Ms. Nice Moddie. And the Wee Moddie's decision is final.

Hope you all understand the need for this!!

Thank you, yer wee moddies

Hello,

Every now and then an unmoderated member posts a message which is against the Membership Guidelines of $groupname. It's usually an honest mistake because the member just didn't realise it was against the rules.

When a member who is not moderated posts something, it immediately goes out to all the members who receive individual emails. All the mods can do at that point is to delete the message from the group site, and put the poster on moderation to prevent future errors by that member.

We don't want to moderate the whole list, because the problems are really pretty rare, and there's no sense in slowing down everyone's messages to prevent those few from slipping through.

So, if you receive a message that is outside of the groups mission (pet ads for breeders, for sale/trade, seeking jobs, personals, or anything illegal or adult), you might want to check the group site to see if the message has been deleted. If it has, then you will know that the moderators have it under control. If it's still there, please forward the message to the moderators at: $owneremail.

One more thing... please don't comment about these inappropriate messages to the whole list or else we will also have to put you on moderation, too.

Thank you!

LittleWebWizard: /* It costs nowt t be nice! */

Below is a selection of admins that have been pillaged (with permission) from various Freegle groups that all basically contain the same message. You are welcome to use them in their entirety or otherwise.

Be Nice
We've found that the vast majority of members are very nice folk, who are
naturally courteous and polite, so this probably won't apply to most of you, as
you'll do it anyway, thank you (but please read it anyway). However, there are
a minority of members who don't seem to have grasped the message that you get a
much better reaction from other members if you're nice to them.

For those to whom being nice doesn't come naturally, here are some guidelines:

1) Don't demand, beg, or exaggerate the situation in your posts or replies.
Keep it simple, polite and factual.

2) Reply ONCE to posts. Many items are very popular, and it's totally
unreasonable to expect personal replies to every message, especially if the
original post was an offer. This isn't the offerer being rude, but practical.
If you've had 20-30 replies, it just takes too much time to send individual
emails. It's actually a group recommendation that the taken message be used to
thank all those who responded, rather than attempt individual emails.

3) Communicate effectively. If you're collecting or delivering, make sure that
you have enough information to actually find the address. Make sure that you
can contact the other person if some problem arises - there's nothing more
frustrating than a 'no-show'. A call to say you'll be a bit late or would like
to rearrange is the minimum courtesy you should be extending.

4) Don't ask for something on the off chance you might get it. If you can use
it, good, but one of the annoyances of Freegle is members asking needlessly
for items they don't really want (as they often change their minds, and, rudely,
then don't collect).

5) Use the fair offer policy. This gives members with limited web access time
to reply. It's sad when somebody with a real need doesn't even see an offer
before it's been taken, precisely because they don't have the same access to the
web as more fortunate members.

6) Most of all (and it shouldn't need to be said) don't be rude, abusive,
annoying or demanding towards other members. Anything which would be considered
flaming in a discussion forum is definitely out, and should be reported to the
moderators at the owner address.

Thanks for reading this, and for keeping the group such a nice place.

[MODERATOR NAMES]

[GROUP NAME] Mod Team

Please send any responses to: [GROUP_NAME]-owner@yahoogroups.com

It costs nowt to be nice!
All items on this group are gifts - donated for free and without strings. In
return, we feel that the members who offer these things are entitled to at least one thing - a little common courtesy.

Please give the following some thought, (it may also improve your chances of
success).

1. Be polite, show some manners, and don't forget to SAY PLEASE!

2. String a coherent sentence together – Don't just say 'I need it', 'I'll take
it off your hands' or 'I'll have it' etc.

3. Don't use 'txt spk' because it just annoys our more mature members, which
means that you have NO CHANCE of success!

4. It's very annoying to be bombarded with emails, ONE is enough. After a day
or so (If no 'Taken' has been posted) send another. If you still get no reply –
Let It Go !

5. When you arrange a collection, BE PROMPT.

6. KEEP APPOINTMENTS - `No Shows' are not acceptable.

7. You MUST declare your intention of re-selling any item(s) that you receive
from our members.

And finally, when you receive an item please consider sending a THANK YOU email
directly to the member who gave it.

Thank You.

Xxx Group Moderators.

Keep it nice folks
In response to a recent complaint, I would like to remind you to BE NICE to each other.

We are all collectively doing something pretty good here, and I like
to think of Freegle as sort of removed from the general dog
eat dog frenzy that goes down on the rest of this planet most of the
time (rather optimistic and deluded of me I know).

Freegle is about saving stuff from landfill, whilst infecting the
community at large with a general sense of altruism...

So please, leave any emotional baggage at the door, and if your not
actually a very nice person, just humour me, and pretend.

I am now going to clamber down from the moral higher ground and get
down to the nitty gritty, if you have any issues or complaints please
report them to us -the mods team and *please* refrain from sending abusive
or rude emails to other members.

We can be reached at: yourgroupname-owner@yahoogroups.com
Dear members,

Sorry to invade your inbox but we have had a couple of reports about members not
following the "be nice" rule on * your group name here *

Please only respond to WANTEDs if you have the item that is being sought and to
OFFERS if you genuinely would like to have the item and can collect it.

Please do not respond with comments or critical remarks.

If anyone believes that there is a post that is inappropriate, please advise the
moderators rather than sending anything critical to the member concerned.

LittleWebWizard:

Occasionally you get a member who is having trouble unsubscribing, by the time they've got round to contacting the mods team they may be quite irate as a result of numerous unsuccessful attempts to unsubscribe. They'll probably be on individual messages and be completly swamped with posts. They almost certainly won't grasp that unsubscribing from a yahoo group is an automated process that doesn't in any way require input from the moderators.

To start here are Yahoo's very comprehensive instructions on how to unsubscribe:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/manage/manage-26.html

Some reasons a member may be having trouble unsubscribing (and some solutions)
arghhhh! I think we need a flow chart here

*They just really can't figure out how to do it (Yahoo isn't the most intuitive interface)

*They've set up two accounts with the same email address and have only unsubscribed from one

The first thing to do when a member is having trouble unsubscribing is to have a look for them on your membership list. In the above situations, when you do search in members you should see them. In which case you can either remove them yourself or send them instructions on how to do it.

If they don't appear in your members list, it could be for a number of reasons:

* they've managed to unsubscribe from your Freegle group but are still subscribed to others

* they've subscribed with an email address other than the one they're emailing you with

* they are unaware of, or haven't accounted for Yahoo's delays (It can take up to three days for Yahoo group posts to stop arriving but usually its pretty instant)

* It's a Yahoo glitch (these are surprisingly common actually)

So if you can't see them on your members list, first of all ask them if they are emailing you from the email account that gets the Freegle posts, and then ask them to forward you one or even some of the posts. This will enable you to eliminate the first two options.

To find out if an email address has ever been subscribed to a Yahoo group you need to
*look in 'management'
*and then under 'group activity'
*enter some or all of the email address/Yahoo ID in 'search logs' on the 'memberships' page.

screen shots for stuff above

Unfortunately, Yahoo groups have been known to continue sending members emails well after they've unsubscribed. As a moderator there is one trick that does tend to sort this out, you can pre-ban a member for a period of about 24 hours and then unban again. This usually stops emails.

If pre-banning doesn't work the member will need to contact Yahoo but as a short term solution here is some instructions on Filtering Emails for some of the more common email clients

*Share a pointer or two about how to post, extravagant WANTEDs, etc.
*Tell members that there's a group closer to where they live.

Commonly members are taken off moderation and put on group settings:
*after they have posted a correctly formatted OFFER or two (including their location if it is policy to state this in your group).
*if they live in the catchment area (if you have any policies restricting out of area posts or cross-posting).

Cafe Groups - General Info
As a Freegle group moderator or owner you may choose to create either a local cafe group for your own group, or combine with other local moderators to create a county wide cafe group.

Cafe groups are useful so that those issues and items which are not suitable for the main Freegle group can be redirected elsewhere.

A cafe group is simply another Yahoo group which is set up in the same manner as the main group via :

http://groups.yahoo.com/start

It is suggested that the group is set up in the same category as the main group e.g.

: Cultures___Community
: Issues_and_Causes
: Environment
: Issues_and_Activism
: Recycling

but is not listed in the main Yahoo! index. This will help ensure that the group is not joined in error by members looking for the main Freegle group, and perhaps help keep the group clear of spammers.

You can link to the cafe group from your main group guidelines and provide a link from your homepage - that should be sufficient to let group members be aware of its existence.

It would also be useful to send out an admin announcing your cafe group on the main Freegle group once it has been created.
If you have an automatic signature on your outgoing emails to freegle group members you could add a link to the cafe group and also include it in your welcome message from the main website.

What Can Cafes Be Used For?
Cafe groups are useful for allowing those topics which are not generally allowed on the main Freegle group.

Request Information, Services or Help
Members may want to request information about local services and ask for recommendations for local tradespeople. They may wish to advertise local community events or ask for volunteers to help out. They may wish to ask for help (perhaps moving a large or bulky item) or get information where they can buy a particular item or get a particular service.

Advertise Businesses and Services
You should decide whether you want to allow members to offer their own services and advertise their businesses directly on the group. You may prefer to ask that members place their adverts in a database or the links section of the group instead. Find a template database here.

Borrowing and Swapping
You can allow borrowing and swapping if you wish, but may like to make it clear to members upon joining that you will not get involved if there is a problem encountered.

Pets
If your main Freegle group allows pet offer or wanted messages, it would be wise to make sure your pet moderator (if you have one) is also a cafe member.

If your group does not allow pets, be aware that the issue may be raised in the cafe. Provide a list of animal rehoming links, and also links to local animal charities too. A list of national links can be found on this page here.

Selling
????

Vouchers and Coupons
As these items are not technical able to be saved from landfill, or they may require further spend in order to be used, you may wish to ask members to offer/request vouchers and coupons on your cafe group.

Technical Stuff
Cafe groups are chat groups, this means that unlike the main Freegle group where emails from the group are sent directly to members, the messages should go onto the list.

To do this, ensure your group settings are as follows:

Click on the Yahoo! group Management link

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/YOURGROUPNAME/management/view

Then

* Group Settings
* Messages
* Posting and Archives (edit)

;Who Can Post

:[Members]

;Reply-to

:[All Members] This ensures the group is a chat group

;Moderation

:[New Members] You may wish to moderate new members upon joining to ensure they are not spammers and then unmoderate after their first message to the group

;Attachments

:[Exclude from site and emails]

;Spam Filter

:[Choose whichever option you prefer]

;Archive Options Access

:[Members]

Note : you may wish to limit who has access to uploading files and creating links on the cafe group.

Auto Send Files
Please find below a number of files that you can use for setting up your own cafe group.

*Cafe Group Guidelines - send out upon joining and then monthly thereafter
*Cafe Group Disclaimer - send out upon joining and then how ever often you prefer
*Cafe Group Businesses Database - send out when you like if you wish to use this option
*Cafe Group Leaving Letter - send out upon leaving the group

Too Many Wanted Messages
WANTEDs can be just as good as offers at keeping stuff out of landfill. If people complain a good thing to do is to do a search within the last 31 days on WANTED and OFFER. Often you’ll find that OFFERs significantly exceed WANTEDs. Sending people the search links shows them that this is true.

You can also point out the advantages of WANTEDs:

* They can jog your memory about stuff that you hadn't thought of offering, including things like used jars, broken i-pods, rags etc needed for a hobby.
* The item requested is really needed, so you know it is going to be appreciated.
* People who initially post a lot of WANTEDs and get stuff usually start offering later. That's the magic of generosity - it breeds more!

If someone's still unhappy, suggest they filter out emails from your group with WANTED in the title.

Explain that if someone is being too greedy, other members will notice it, and not respond – so the group can become self-policing without the need for additional rules.

There can be disadvantages to limiting, WANTED posts:

* You will have to keep track of all the wanted posts to ensure your limits are not exceeded.
* There are members that don't like to post offers on the list who frequently respond off list to WANTEDS - these members may also post WANTEDS.
* Members might just start posting WANTEDs on neighbouring groups, causing people to travel further and use more fuel to collect stuff.
* If your group is all OFFERS you may end up only attracting people who want to get stuff.

Only consider imposing rules on WANTEDs if they are seriously upsetting the group rather than just one or two individuals – for more information on this go to *wanted posts*: <---Link here to 'wanted posts' in the advice section of the handbook

It occasionally comes to light that a member has been reselling goods that they have obtained on Freegle. Claiming or asking for items in order to resell or redistribute them does not violate Freegle guidelines directly, but many members prefer to give their items to people who will be using them not selling them.

Resellers should disclose their intention to resell/redistribute any item when accepting an offer and when making wanted posts.

If you discover (or think) a member is failing to disclose this information when asked or when posting a wanted, you may wish to:

*Keep the member on permanent moderation.

*Write to the member informing them of the guidelines and warning them not to do it again.

*Issue a strike: a strike is warning for a serious misdemeanour; two strikes can lead to a member being unsubscribed - at the owner's discretion. (link to banning vs moderation)

*Send an admin to the group reminding them of the reselling guidelines.

Members can:

*Ask responders if they intend to resell an item before agreeing to gift it.

*Mention the Yahoo ID of the person the item has been gifted to in the taken post (if lots of taken posts include this info, then it will be apparent if a small group of members are hoovering up items offered on the list).

*A few groups do choose to have a policy of no reselling. It's worth bearing in mind that it is hard to prove that a member has been reselling goods that have been acquired via Freegle.

Using one's home group has personal & collective, community & environmental benefits. It:

* Reduces the 'competition' for items
* Reduces 'no shows'
* Saves money - by reducing the amount of traveling that group members need to do to give and receive items
* Reduces abuse of the system as the community is less anonymous - members get to know each other better which leads to fewer 'bad behaviours'
* No transport? Local groups make Freegle more accessible to everyone
* No van/trailer? Bulky items may even be collectible on foot if they are only a few streets away
* Reduces the number of emails per group - lots of smaller groups means we have more choice in how many posts we receive and from where we receive them.
* Increases good neighbourliness
* Enhances the local community spirit
* Reduces the negative environmental impact - distance travelled is lessened, reducing the carbon foot print
* Reduces the 'competition' for items
* Reduces 'no shows'
* Saves money - by reducing the amount of traveling that group members need to do to give and receive items
* Increases good neighbourliness
* Enhances the local community spirit
* Reduces the negative environmental impact - distance travelled is lessened, reducing the carbon foot print
Cross-posting

Many groups have a policy on restricting cross-posting. This is when a member sends an Offer or Wanted request to more than one group at the same time. Cross-posting is particularly common in built up areas where there are lots of Freegle groups that are very close together.

Problems with allowing cross posting:
*It drastically increases the number of messages in each group, pushing more local posts off the front page.

*Members who have joined more than one group see an unnecessary repetition of posts.

*It’s not fair to the poster’s home community & is against the spirit of local groups.

*It wastes fuel and increases pollution if items are given to members of non-local groups.

Problems with restricting cross posting:
*It is time consuming to monitor, although not if you use the moderation plug in: http://wiki.modplugin.org/index.php/Checking_for_crossposts

*Unless all surrounding groups have a similar policy it can be confusing to members where groups have different rules.

*It may lead to moderators having to deal with more complaints.

*Many mods feel that it is too restrictive.

How to handle cross-posting:
If you do decide to restrict cross-posting you need to decide on a period. Usually groups ask members to wait 24-48 hours between posts. You may reject posts outright that are too far away e.g. further than 5 miles from the group or beyond your neighbouring group's area (this can depend on the kind of area your group covers (urban or rural) and how many neighbouring groups you have). Explain to members why you have a 'no cross-posting' rule, they're usually quite understanding when they know the reasons

Selling
????

Vouchers and Coupons
As these items are not technical able to be saved from landfill, or they may require further spend in order to be used, you may wish to ask members to offer/request vouchers and coupons on your cafe group.

Technical Stuff
Cafe Groups - General Info
As a Freegle group moderator or owner you may choose to create either a local cafe group for your own group, or combine with other local moderators to create a county wide cafe group.

Cafe groups are useful so that those issues which are not suitable for the main Freegle group can be redirected elsewhere.

Note : you may wish to limit who has access to uploading files and creating links on the cafe group.

Selling
????

Technical Stuff
Cafe groups are chat groups, this means that unlike the main Freegle group where emails from the group are sent directly to members, the messages should go onto the list.

To do this, ensure your group settings are as follows:

Click on the Yahoo! group Management link

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/YOURGROUPNAME/management/view

Then

* Group Settings
* Messages
* Posting and Archives (edit)

;Who Can Post

:[Members]

;Reply-to

:[All Members] This ensures the group is a chat group

;Moderation

:[New Members] You may wish to moderate new members upon joining to ensure they are not spammers and then unmoderate after their first message to the group

;Attachments

:[Exclude from site and emails]

;Spam Filter

:[Choose whichever option you prefer]

;Archive Options Access

:[Members]

Auto Send Files
Unsubscribe

We have received a request to unsubscribe you from the Bedford Freegle Cafe group. We have acted on your request but please be aware that changes to your subscription may take a day or two to go through the Yahoo system, so please be patient. Further attempts to unsubscribe may slow it down further.

If you are un-subscribing because you were feeling a little overwhelmed by the number of emails, please be aware that you can choose the "DAILY DIGEST" or "SPECIAL NOTICES" rather than receiving individual emails. "DAILY DIGEST" gives you one email message for every 25 messages sent to the group, and "SPECIAL NOTICES" means you only receive administration notices via email, and then you can just read the group messages on the main web page when it suits you, which is here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/YOURGROUPNAMECAFE/messages

If you did not request to be unsubscribed, it was probably done because your email was "bouncing", meaning that for some reason email was not being delivered to the email account that you designated when you joined. Usually, that's because your email box is full.

We're sorry to see you go. Please feel free to rejoin at any time. The main webpage link is:
This is a group where people in the XYZ area can share local information, chat about local issues (including recycling of course) or just get to know one another.

* Ask for help, advice or information from your fellow Freegle members

* Discuss Freegle - we welcome your comments and ideas. If you would like to help publicise Freegle - let us know!

Selling
????

Technical Stuff
Cafe groups are chat groups, this means that unlike the main Freegle group where emails from the group are sent directly to members, the messages should go onto the list.

To do this, ensure your group settings are as follows:

Click on the Yahoo! group Management link

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/YOURGROUPNAME/management/view

Then

* Group Settings
* Messages
* Posting and Archives (edit)

;Who Can Post

:[Members]

;Reply-to

:[All Members] This ensures the group is a chat group

;Moderation

:[New Members] You may wish to moderate new members upon joining to ensure they are not spammers and then unmoderate after their first message to the group

;Attachments

:[Exclude from site and emails]

;Spam Filter

:[Choose whichever option you prefer]

;Archive Options Access

:[Members]

Auto Send Files
Please find below a number of files that you can use for setting up your own cafe group.

*Cafe Group Guidelines - send out upon joining and then monthly thereafter
*Cafe Group Disclaimer - send out upon joining and then how ever often you prefer
*Cafe Group Businesses Database - send out when you like if you wish to use this option
*Cafe Group Leaving Letter - send out upon leaving the group
