Posts go straight on the posters wall and their friends wall, depending on their Facebook settings and on them ticking the box for this to happen. This happens with anything posted on Facebook. It will not connect with your Freegle group until you have approved the post.

For members on Yahoo:

*We don't publish any posts to non members at all unless a member has said we can.

*If they do say we can republish, then we will republish the subject line and any photo.
*They also get a choice of further options, to allow the body of the message to be displayed, and to allow replies. They have to select these before we do them.

So the members on Yahoo have  controls over what is published.

For members joining via Facebook and Direct:

*We assume we can display the message body anywhere, and allow replies from anyone.
*When they post we ask if they want to publish this to their friends.
*Their Facebook name will be shown; Facebook never lets you hide your name.
*Liking the group page does not mean the member automatically becomes friends with everyone else in the Freegle group.
*The member's information is not shared with the page, either. Pages cannot see the profiles of people who connect with them, only their profile photo and name. In addition, Pages do not receive a News Feed with information about what people who choose to connect with them are doing.

Firstly it doesn't really matter whether your personal account is the admin or a dedicated account. If you do want to change it though, do this:

*Log out of the new account.
*Log back in with your personal account.
*Go to your page and at the bottom of the left hand column there's a box saying "X people like this". Click on the Show all link.
*You'll get a list of all the people who like your page, hopefully including the new user you've just created. Click on Make Admin.
*Log out of your personal account and log back in as the new user.
*Go back to the page and remove admin rights from your personal account. (Only do this if you don't want your personal account to be an admin as well).

No, Facebook doesn't let you for safety and security reasons, This policy is in place to prevent abuse.

The only solution is to delete the page and then recreate it with the new name.

However this won't prevent members who have liked the page from responding to posts on the wall. For them:

#You can set the republisher not to post to the wall so they have nothing to reply to (but that defeats the point of all this).
#You can use the opportunity to explain to members the correct procedure and then remove their post if you wish. You can send them an email or comment on the wall..
#You can use an automatic responder. There is now one available in the group settings, you can just select it 

The last option is the best. Trying to persuade people on Facebook not to post on Walls is a doomed effort.

When a page admin "likes" a post on their page the post may appear as if "Liked from the Page admin's personal account. Unfortunately this is a bug in Facebook and at present there is no solution.

They have now enabled pages to like other pages although at present it is not retrospective. However you can unlike and like from the correct page.

The default can only be adjusted for people that are not fans of your Page. Once they become fans (as you probably are), they will see the Page's wall as the default.

New pages do not have tabs, instead you will see the list of what were tabs down the left side.
This is being changed shortly and you will have a timeline and boxes.

Yes, but it doesn't happen automatically when you delete them from the ''Messages'' page on Yahoo.

You need to do two things:

*If you have RSS Graffiti set up to put posts on your Wall (from RSS Graffiti), you'll need to delete it from there. Use the usual Facebook method - the cross on the right hand side of the post.
*For the ''Posts'' , Page Admins (only) should see a ''Delete'' link on the right hand side of the post.

It might be nice to have this integrated into the ModPlugin, but it isn't (at least yet).

Click "Edit Info" under your FB page name and select "Apps" from the left hand menu. Find the Application you want to remove and click the "X" at the far right of the page. Confirm that you want to remove the Application,

On an individual basis you can click on the x at the side of the post and remove comment and even ban member if comment is derogatory.  

If you find they are becoming a nuisance then,  you can add nocomment @ republisher.freegle.in as an admin on your group.

*Arrange POP forwarding to '''nocomment @ republisher.freegle.in''' 
*Make it an admin on your group by:

This should make this user a Page Admin. It will then receive notifications when someone comments, send it to nocomment @ republisher.freegle.in which will reply with a message saying:  "I'm afraid you can't reply like this; please click on the link above instead." and redirect them.

When you post, it appears in your own status, and hence your friends' news feeds as soon as you post it.

Not much! You still moderate the group using Yahoo.

Absolutely! The [[Mod Plug-in]] has some features to help it work well with Freegle Direct.

Each person joining using Freegle Direct becomes an email-only member of your group using an ''FBUser''' address.

== Why don't they join with their normal address? ==

If they were to sign up with their own email they'd get emails from Yahoo telling them to click on links which would then tell them they needed a Yahoo ID. They'd also get messages or digests from Yahoo with links which took them to the Yahoo Groups page.

So they would end up very confused - they tried to join the group one way, but they keep getting pulled back to Yahoo - and we're trying to provide something better than that. By giving them special addresses we can make what they see much more sensible. And we can do other things, like:
* Allow people to be more anonymous if they want.
* Help people manage replies to their mails.

== Why are there lots of these ''FBUser'' applications? ==

The very first time someone joins a group using Freegle Direct, you'll get 10 applications for new members. This is so that it has a bunch of addresses it can hand out to people. Thereafter, once someone joins, it'll apply for another email address for next time.

If you don't approve the ''FBUser'' applications, it may ask for some more, in case they've been lost. But any it doesn't use will unsubscribe after a while.

== How do I find out the 'real' address for a member? ==

The modplugin will show you the real address.

You can also get a list of all the Freegle Direct members - quite right too, they're your members. Go to your group's settings, and scroll down to the bottom; there's a link to mail the members to your -owner address.

== Why can members join immediately? ==

Some groups are used to checking memberships before they are approved. That's something which people using Yahoo Groups are used to, and it's something which used to be quite common. In the early days of the web, people expected websites to be difficult to join - they all were - and they were prepared to put in the effort. But things have changed, and nowadays people expect to be able to start using sites immediately.

So it might seem obvious to us that people should be prepared to wait a little while and answer a few basic questions, because it's worth it once you're in. == Can I still approve Yahoo members? ==

Yes. It'll harm your group, because you'll lose about half of your prospective members - but you can if you want to.

Just make sure you approve the ''FBUser'' members.

== How do I contact Freegle Direct members? ==

You mail the address they used to join the group, like any other member, either from the membership list or using the plugin. For example, if you use the plugin to reject a message, the rejection message will go back to them.

== Do Freegle Direct members get mails on joining? ==

They don't get the normal Yahoo ones, because for most groups these are written with people using Yahoo in mind, and would be confusing for other people. You can configure joining messages from the ''Message Texts'' section of your group's settings.

== How do I ban a member? ==

You can ban members on Yahoo as normal.

Fairly soon, the modplugin will also then ban them on Freegle Direct. But for now you can ban people by email address or IP address by going to your group settings and using the options in ''Advanced Options''.

== How do I delete a message? ==

You can delete messages on Yahoo as normal.

Fairly soon, the modplugin will then also delete it from Freegle Direct. But for now you also need to delete it on there. The first time you want to do this, you need to:
* log in to Freegle Direct with a Facebook id
* Go to ''My Settings''
* Click on the link at the bottom right to check for Page Admin rights.
Then you can delete a message using the little cross on the right hand side of a message.

Change ''EdinburghFreegle'' to your own group name - the last part of the URL of your Yahoo Group.

There are quite a lot of settings, and most of them are pretty obvious on there. So we'll just cover a few key questions here.

== Should I point links at Yahoo, Freegle Direct or Facebook? ==

If you're not sure, point them at Freegle Direct. If you want new members to find Yahoo by default instead, you can do that, but we believe Freegle Direct is a better interface for most people to use.

Pointing the links at Facebook would be an odd thing to do - best check if you're tempted to do that.

== Can I change the keywords on my group? ==

Some groups have different keywords, e.g. ''OFFERED'' or ''REQUESTED''. You can configure these if you like.

== What are Chase up mails? ==

These emails go out to members who have not posted a TAKEN or RECEIVED to an original post within the time frame you have configured, so they can either post one of those or repost it. They will be sent out no more than twice for each post.

Chase up mails have proved very successful at making your group more active. A lot of people dip in and out of groups, so reposting allows a different set of people to see the post. We've seen a lot of items which get TAKEN or RECEIVED after quite a few reposts just because it's easy, when without them members would have given up.

== Why does it want to know our reposting rules? ==

One of the ways Freegle Direct helps your members is by making it easy to:
*post TAKENs/RECEIVEDs
*repost after the right time
*post on neighbouring groups
This is how you tell it how to behave.

= Mapping and Categorisation =

Freegle Direct will try to map your messages, and assign them to different categories, based on the subject line.

== Why do I get emails asking me to 'please map message no.?' ==

Mostly, Freegle Direct can map the messages without your help. But if can't, or thinks it is too far from your group, it will ask for your help.

== How do I correct a mapping? ==

You can do this either from an email you receive, or from the ''Map wrong?'' link on Freegle Direct. What you do is:
* Check what it's using to map - it will say ''Currently mapped using'' in the top left.
* Is it using something it shouldn't use? If so:
** Cut and paste that into the ''If the mapping got confused by a word, and it should be ignored, enter it here:'' box.
** Click ''Save Correction''.
* Is it using the right part, but mapping to the wrong place? If so:
** Search for the right place using the google search box, or drag the marker.
** Copy and paste the correct part of the location line into the ''Which bit is the location?'' box
** Click ''Save Correction''.

== I've corrected a mapping, but it hasn't 'stuck'? ==

Forward the mapping email you received to ''support@ilovefreegle.org'' and explain the problem.

== How do I make it map to the right places? ==

If your group is based in one main area, e.g. Bristol, put that in the group settings in the ''Search Hint''. It will save the app finding and pointing to a place somewhere else, e.g. in Yorkshire, which may happen to have a place with the same name.

== Why do we categorise messages? ==

Some members are interested in particular general areas, e.g. baby stuff. This helps them see just the posts they are interested in.

== Can we have more/different categories? ==

We've chosen these ones fairly carefully. If we have too many categories they become less useful. We'll review this periodically, but it won't change often.

== I'm not sure which category to put a post in? ==

You can just use what you think is nearest. It does not have to be perfect - it will average out if you get it wrong. A suggested list of what goes where can be found here[[Facebook Categories|Facebook Categories]].

== Why do I keep getting asked about posts with no location in them? ==

Freegle Direct will look hard for locations in posts, and if it can't find one it will ask you in case it's there but it hasn't spotted it. Sometimes it will be obvious to you that there's no location in it. We might be able to improve this a bit in future, but for now if there' no location, just delete the mail.

If your group doesn't require locations on WANTEDs you can turn this off in your group settings.

= How does the Facebook page work? =

Depending on what you want, your group may or may not also have a Facebook page. It's a great way to get free advertising - even if you don't like Facebook yourself, it's a good source of members. Read [[Freegle Direct - Why You Should Add Facebook]] for more on that.

== What is Freegle Direct? ==

Freegle Direct (formerly known as the Republisher) is a way of extending your Yahoo Group to provide:

*A better interface. Members can use your group via ilovefreegle.org, or via Facebook,  as well as via Yahoo.
*Direct provides some of the things moderators and members have been asking for:
**Recent posts will hide OFFERs which are TAKEN or WANTEDs which are RECEIVED
**Show just OFFERs or just WANTEDs
**Has maps to show where items are
**An ALERT feature which alerts members to new posts by keyword
**A working search, and categories for different kinds of items
**All your groups accessible in a single place
**Provides much easier ways to work with your posts, so you can mark your OFFERs as TAKEN, read and reply to members who have responded and repost items with a single click.
*More function, including for existing members.
**Suggestions of relevant messages people might have missed.
**Better digests than Yahoo (e.g. to show which items are still available).
**Reminders to mark OFFERs as TAKEN or repost.

== Can I see it? ==

Sure.

== Why do I need it? ==

Yahoo Groups is old and clunky. It's never been that well suited to freegling, and while the rest of the web has moved on, Yahoo hasn't (and won't). If your group remains just on Yahoo, it's unlikely to grow, and will probably decline and die over the next few years.

There is sound statistical evidence for this. If you doubt it, just look at your group home page. What have your posting numbers done over the last couple of years?

== But surely Yahoo is fine? ==

That's because you're used to it, and so are most of your existing members. But you won't get many new ones.

As an example, Facebook is growing at '''200 times the rate of Yahoo''', and half of all web traffic in the UK is from Facebook. Whether you personally like Facebook or not, it's clearly where most people are spending their online lives - especially the younger ones, who we need for future growth. How many of your kids or grandkids are on Yahoo?

== Does this replace my Yahoo Group? ==

No, it operates in parallel with it.

== What's the difference between Freegle Direct, Facebook, and Twitter? ==

Freegle Direct lets people use your group on ilovefreegle.org. For those people who like Facebook and spend time there, there is a Facebook app which lets people use it from within Facebook (which takes advantage of Facebook's electronic word of mouth). And you can publish posts onto Twitter, which is free advertising and attracts people back to join the group.

== I loathe Facebook and want nothing to do with it ==

First, think about your members. You might hate Facebook, but what about your members, and your potential members?

But if you don't want anything at all to do with Facebook, you don't have to. You can set it up so that people can use it via ilovefreegle.org and not Facebook.

== Will my members have to get used to using a new site? ==

No. If they want to, they can carry on exactly as at present.
