We often get requests and offers for both Sky and Virgin boxes.

Sky boxes and dishes

The older ones are purchased and belong to the users. As such they are entitled to give them away to whomever they wish as long as they give them in good faith. Those receiving them are entitled to use them but only for legal activities.

The new Sky Q boxes are different, they always remain the property of Sky and therefore should not be offered or requested. https://www.sky.com/help/articles/charges-for-not-returning-sky-q-equipment

Sky viewing cards remain the property of Sky and shouldn't be passed on. https://www.sky.com/shop/__PDF/SkyPlusHD.pdf

Virgin and Virgin Media "boxes"

The ones that are used exclusively for Cable TV decoding are usually the property of Virgin Media (and thus subject to the terms on their website). However, Virgin Media also offer a freeview box that the customer buys, so they are fine to be offered and requested. Their wireless routers are given away with their broadband subscriptions and become the property of the customer at the end of any initial contract period. So it is illegal to pass any lent boxes on to another person and requests and offers should not be allowed. However the freeview boxes and wireless routers can be given away in the same way as Sky boxes above. Bottom line is, though - if in doubt, don't allow!

You can provide this link to your member for clarification of Virgin's t&c on equipment:
