Location

Traditionally the location appears in the Subject Line like this:

OFFER Item (Location)

or

WANTED Item (Location)

This enables members who are reading the posts as emails to see the essential information without actually having to open the email.

The advantage of asking for location on an offer post is:

  • So that people can see roughly how far they would have to travel to collect the item.
  • It saves member's time in deciding whether or not they are interested in the offer or want without having to contact the other person.

A location on a wanted post can also be helpful because:

  • Freegle Groups operate on a local basis, and many people want to know that their goods go to the benefit of the local community.
  • Many members belong to Freegle groups for environmental reasons, and they want to make sure that they minimise the miles that their goods travel.
  • Some members prefer to deliver WANTEDs either because they do not want people coming to their home, or so that they are not inconvenienced by having to wait in for someone to collect - and possibly not turn up at all.
  • If people do not post their location, there is a suspicion that they are trying to collect goods from a wide area in order to sell them on.

Locations generally:

  • Providing a location gives posts more credibility.
  • Local people will notice a post which has their location.

Using a postcode alone is less effective; many people are not familiar with post codes in their area, and some post codes will cover too big an area to be useful.
