Joining as an email-only member and changing message delivery settings via email:

If a member doesn't already have a Yahoo! ID and if they don't want to set one up they can set up an email only account by simply sending a blank email to:

  • GROUPNAMEHERE-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

and to unsubscribe:

  • GROUPNAMEHERE-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

With an email only account the member will receive posts from a yahoo group as emails but NOT be able to access the web features of the yahoo group. Also, as when you join via the web, the default message delivery setting is individual emails. You can change your message delivery settings via email too:

  • to switch to normal (individual messages) mode: GROUPNAMEHERE-normal@yahoogroups.com
  • to switch to digest mode: GROUPNAMEHERE-digest@yahoogroups.com
  • to switch to no mail mode: GROUPNAMEHERE-nomail@yahoogroups.com

Regardless of whether a member has joined via the web or has an email only account s/he can use these methods to change their settings.

For a reason unbeknownst to us, it isn't possible for members to change their settings to the special notice option via email, but the moderators' plug-in can do this as a bulk operation, the instructions on how to do this can be found here: http://wiki.modplugin.org/index.php/Bulk_Operations#Web_Only_to_Special_Notices

The member can also post messages to the group via email by sending an email yourgroupfreegle@yahoogroups.com Finally if a member wants to get a Yahoo Id or asks why she/he cannot post and see the posts on the website; you can find their membership details and click on 'request profile` amending the standard Yahoo message if you wish.
