How To Back Up Your Members List

Find The Membership Data

Access the Members section of your Yahoo group.

If you look at the left hand side of the main group page, you will likely see the following options:

  • Home
  • Messages
  • Pending
  • Spam? [Delete]
  • Post
  • Attachments
  • Files
  • Photos
  • Links
  • Database
  • Polls
  • Members
  • Pending
  • Calendar

Click on the Members link.

At the right hand side of that page you will see the options:

  • Invite People
  • Remove
  • Ban
  • Download
  • Export

Data Types

Download

The Download option provides a simple list of email addresses e.g.

myname@hotmail.com
yourname@gmail.co.uk

Export

The Export option provides a more detailed list containing:

  • Email address (if an email only member), or Yahoo! ID
  • Email address
  • A number of null/blank fields
  • The members' current message preference i.e. Individual Emails, Daily Digest, Special Notices
  • The members' moderation status i.e. Moderated, Group Settings or Can't Post
  • The members' date of joining
  • The members' email style preference i.e. Fully Featured, or Traditional

Copy

In each case, right click on the page and choose the option:

Select All

Then right click on the page and choose the option:

Copy

Save

Open up Microsoft Notepad, Excel (or other spreadsheet package), or access your Mods Group if you have one and navigate to the Files section of the group.

In Notepad and Excel, create a new file and right click and Paste the data into the new file, then save - perhaps giving it then name:

YOURGROUPNAME_backup_ddmmyy

In your mods group, create a new file (perhaps in a folder dedicated to holding group membership backups). Option:

  • Files
  • Create Text File

Give the file a meaningful name e.g.:

YOURGROUPNAME_backup_ddmmyy

then click Create File

This way the file will be accessible to all members of your mod team.

Upload

You can also upload the text file or spreadsheet to your mods group if you have saved it that way.

In the Files section, choose Add File

Click the Browse button and locate the file you have previously saved on your computer, then click Open, and finally Upload File.
