10% Poll Procedure

If a Volunteer wants to request a poll about some aspect of Freegle that concerns them, it has been agreed that they are required to get 10% of Central members to support this. A procedure for putting this into action was discussed on Central in July 2010, and agreed (with one small subsequent amendment) in message [1] 14208.

The procedure for a Volunteer putting forward a request is:

Initially post their concerns and reason for wanting a poll on Central.

This message post should include the proposed text for the poll, and should include in the subject something distinctive such as 'Poll Request' or 'Poll Call'.

Depending on the response and comments, the volunteer can either abandon the poll request, or move to a straw poll. The straw poll is a Yahoo poll initiated by the Volunteer on Central, and should be of the form, "Do you support an official poll asking this/these questions..." The questions asked need not be identical to the original ones proposed, as there may have been good suggestions for rephrasing.

The poll should hide voters identities, and be set to be manually closed.

Within a fortnight of the straw poll being opened, a Central moderator will send a special notice announcing the poll. The straw poll will be closed by the moderator one fortnight after this announcement. If the number of 'Yes votes at that point equals or exceeds 10% of the current Central membership, it will trigger an official poll.
